Yei came together in Mexico City in the early 2000s, with El Feo as their vocalist and songwriter. Their music pulled from ska, punk, and rock 'n' roll, and they built a following with songs like "Incomprendido," which connected with listeners who felt out of place.
Their lyrics often dealt with difficult subjects, violence, poverty, social injustice, and that directness sometimes drew criticism. El Feo kept writing from that perspective anyway. The band put out three albums and some EPs over time, and their sound picked up touches of reggae, hip-hop, and Mexican folk along the way.
Besides El Feo, the group included Lalo on guitar, Sergio on bass, and Gallo on drums. Other songs like "Ella Ya Me Olvido" and "No Quiero Saber" rounded out their catalog.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
