The Yellow Hammers formed in Minneapolis in the early 2000s, led by singer-songwriter Anya Blackwood. Their debut album 'The Sleeping City' came out in 2006, with the single 'Circle' getting attention. The band's sound leaned toward indie folk, with Blackwood's voice and writing at the center, backed by guitarist Ethan Carter, bassist Emily Rose, and drummer Samuel Grey.
They put out several more albums over the next decade, including 'The Dreaming Tree' in 2010, 'The Golden Hour' in 2013, and 'The Raven's Song' in 2016. Songs like 'I Could Never Repay Baby' and 'Pass The Bottle' showed their mix of melody and personal lyrics. They worked with other artists in that scene, including Bon Iver, The National, and Fleet Foxes.
In 2008, Blackwood faced public scrutiny over substance abuse allegations, which created some turbulence for the band. They kept recording and playing through it. Their music has appeared in some films and TV shows since then.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
