Yen Town Band formed in 1984 with Kazuhiro Imaizumi on vocals and Tatsuya Ueda on guitar, both coming from the punk band ARB. Their 1985 debut album 'Silent Screamer' introduced a sound that mixed avant-garde rock with atmospheric ballads. The track 'Swallowtail Butterfly' from that album became their most recognizable song.
Their music drew attention for its introspective lyrics and ethereal quality, which some critics found unsettling. The band's live shows sometimes turned chaotic, with audiences reacting strongly to their performances. In 1988, keyboardist Jun Togawa left the group amid rumors of internal tensions.
Yen Town Band's work from that period continues to have listeners, particularly 'Swallowtail Butterfly,' which remains their best-known recording. Their catalog reflects a particular moment in Japanese music when punk backgrounds were giving way to more atmospheric approaches.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
