Yeni Turku formed in Ankara in 1977, with Erkan Oğur on saz, Derya Köroğlu and Ahmet Kaya on vocals. They worked from Anatolian folk traditions, though their sound wasn't strictly traditional. Their 1980 album 'Kalırsa Bir Soru' gave them a wider audience, with the title track becoming one of their best-known songs.
They kept recording through it. The lineup changed at times, with musicians like Uğur Işılak on accordion and İsmail Hakkı Demircioğlu on percussion joining later.
Songs like 'Bana Bir Masal Anlat Baba,' 'İstersen Hiç Başlamasın,' and 'Karanfil' show their range, some spare and vocal-driven, others more arranged. They recorded steadily into the late 1990s, with albums like 'Güneş Doğarken,' 'Sen Ağlama,' and 'Bir Zamanlar.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
