YER formed in 2016 around singer-songwriter Emily Kemp, guitarist James Roberts, and drummer Kieran Crawford. Their debut EP 'The Sun and the Rain' came out in 2017, followed by the 2019 release 'A Bolt in the Ocean' that gave them their breakout single of the same name.
Kemp's vocals carry a confessional quality over Roberts' guitar work and Crawford's drumming. Songs like 'A Bolt In The Ocean' and 'Guerra Interna' show their blend of folk and electronic textures, with lyrics that lean toward the introspective.
Some listeners found the material emotionally heavy, but the band kept writing in that vein. They've mentioned Portishead, Radiohead, and Nick Drake as touchstones.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
