Yerba Buena came together in San Francisco in the late 1990s as a collective with members like vocalist Cucu Diamantes, bassist Enrique 'Kiki' Sanchez, drummer Andres Levin, and keyboardist David Ralicke. Their first album, simply called 'Yerba Buena,' came out in 1999 and included the track 'La Candela.'
Their music pulled from Latin rhythms, jazz, and electronic beats, with songs like 'Bilingual Girl' and 'Como un Gavilan' showing that mix. They worked with artists including Carlos Santana and John Paul Jones along the way.
Their sound was hard to pin down to one genre, which kept them from fitting neatly into mainstream categories.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
