Archive material and source history

Yes Yes a Thousand Times Yes formed in 1968 when bassist Chris Squire and guitarist Peter Banks started playing together. They went through some early lineup changes before settling on the name Yes in 1969, with Jon Anderson on vocals, Bill Bruford on drums, and Tony Kaye on keyboards.

Their 1971 album 'The Yes Album' included 'Pretty Bill,' a song with lyrics by Anderson that stirred some debate at the time. The band's sound involved complex arrangements and longer instrumental sections, pulling from progressive rock and other styles.

In 1972 they released 'Close to the Edge,' an album that featured a nearly 20-minute title track. The lineup shifted frequently through the early 1970s, with Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Alan White joining at different points.
