Yesterday's New Quintet formed in London in 1967 around vocalist and songwriter Celeste Avalon, with guitarist Ethan Blackwood, bassist Marcus Sinclair, drummer Jonas Hawthorne, and saxophonist Anya Vasiliev. They worked in a space between jazz, rock, and folk, and their lyrics often touched on love, loss, and what you might call a search for enlightenment.
In 1971 they released the album "Celestial Tapestry," which included the track "Sun Goddess." The song's melodies and harmonies gave it an ethereal quality that connected with listeners, and it became their most recognized piece. The band's unconventional style and lyrical content sometimes drew criticism alongside the praise, challenging some of the norms of the time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
