Yesvalgina formed in São Paulo around 2003, with a lineup that included producer Felipe Abreu, vocalist Vanessa da Mata, and percussionist Juliano Ribeiro. They started putting out music in the early 2000s, working with a mix of electronic beats and more experimental sounds that didn't fit neatly into one genre.
Their song 'Aquela Garota' came out in 2005 and got some attention, a ballad that leaned into cryptic lyrics and a hazy, atmospheric feel. It led to their self-titled debut album the following year, which picked up both listeners and critical notice, though not everyone was on board with their style.
Over the next several years, they released a few more records, including Amália in 2009 and O Enigma in 2013. Their music kept that layered, introspective quality, built around da Mata's vocals and Abreu's production, without ever settling into a predictable pop formula.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
