Yiddish formed in 2006 around lead vocalist and guitarist Yerachmiel Begun. Their debut album 'The Yiddish Touch' came out the following year, mixing Klezmer with pop and rock. They've put out other records like 'Mameloshen' and 'Yiddish Soul' since then.
Begun wrote 'A Little Letter to Mom,' a song that became particularly well-known. It's a personal tribute to his mother, with straightforward lyrics about love and gratitude. The track appears regularly in their live sets.
The band includes David Torkovsky on keyboards and accordion, Michal Cohen on bass, and Amit Hai Cohen on drums. They've worked with musicians like Itzhak Perlman and Daniel Kahn, and have performed with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.
Some in the Orthodox Jewish community have questioned their use of traditional melodies in a contemporary setting. The group has generally kept making music that blends those older sounds with newer arrangements.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
