Yilila formed in 2006 as three brothers from the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Clinton Walker sang and played guitar, Brendon Walker added backing vocals and guitar, and Nathan Walker handled drums and percussion. Their family came from the Bunuba and Kija tribes, and that connection to place and tradition shaped their music from the start.
Their debut album 'Burrbangarri' came out in 2008, with the track 'Ayanjanarri (Water Song)' becoming a notable piece. They followed with two more albums, 'Bindji' in 2010 and 'Djanabi' in 2014. Songs like 'Dhararri' and 'Mijiyanga' continued their exploration of themes tied to land and culture.
They've performed at venues including the Sydney Opera House and festivals like Glastonbury. Their music has appeared in film and television, including the documentary 'The Cove.' Beyond performances, they've been involved in advocacy work around Indigenous rights and environmental concerns.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
