Yizo Yizo formed in Soweto, Johannesburg in 1996, taking their name from a television series about South African youth. The original lineup included Mduduzi "Mdoovar" Tshabalala, Sifiso "Hlophe" Ndlovu, and Siboniso "Simz" Sikhonde. Their debut album "Umkhosi Wethu" came out in 1997, featuring the single "Avulekile Amasango (remix)" that became popular for its mix of Zulu rhythms and hip-hop beats.
They followed with "Umhlaba Wonke" in 2000 and "Iphupho Lami" in 2003, though the latter marked the end of that original lineup. A best-of compilation appeared in 2007. Some traditionalists criticized their fusion approach, but the group kept making music that spoke to social issues.
Their sound blended traditional Zulu elements with contemporary hip-hop, creating energetic tracks that resonated particularly with younger listeners. While they faced lineup changes over time, those early recordings from the late 1990s and early 2000s captured a specific moment in South African music.
