Yllys D'Paula is a Finnish musical collective led by vocalist Paula Karppanen, with Ville Havula on guitar, Kimmo Pohjonen on accordion, and Marko Timonen on drums. They formed in Helsinki in 2005, drawing from Finnish folk traditions and world music influences. Their sound is built around Karppanen's distinctive voice, which moves between ethereal whispers and more forceful passages.
They've released five albums, starting with 2007's 'Sudenpäivä' and followed by 'Kainuu' in 2010. The 2013 album 'Abracadabra' gave them their best-known song, the title track. Later records like 'Ålkeh' from 2016 incorporated Sámi musical elements, and 2020's 'Pikku Pieni' showed a more intimate side alongside their atmospheric style.
In 2014, Karppanen dealt with vocal cord damage that required surgery, but she recovered and the band continued. Some discussion has surfaced about their approach to cultural influences, though they've described their work as drawing inspiration from various traditions rather than appropriating them.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
