Yoel Monteiro came from São Filipe on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde. He grew up listening to the music of Cesária Évora and Ildo Lobo, which shaped his approach to the traditional morna and coladeira rhythms of his home.
His self-titled debut album arrived in 1999 and included the song 'Aie,' which became a national hit. That track's success established him as a prominent voice in Cape Verdean music. He followed it with albums like 'Mundu Nôbu' in 2002 and 'Nôs Mornas' in 2005.
Monteiro's work blends those Cape Verdean styles with touches of jazz and blues. His singing carries a soulful, poetic quality that connects with listeners familiar with the region's musical traditions.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
