Yola Dyonina formed in 2015 when singer Yola Araújo teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Lucas Santtana. Their debut song 'Uma Dica' caught on quickly in Brazil, with its upbeat rhythm and lyrics that spoke to black women's experiences.
That early attention brought some criticism along with it. Some listeners questioned whether the band was treating Afro-Brazilian culture too commercially, while others debated their approach to representing black identity. Yola Araújo's own comments about race and gender equality drew additional scrutiny.
They released their first album in 2015, followed by others like 'Baiana' in 2017 and 'Iracema' in 2019. These records kept working with Brazilian rhythms while letting the sound develop naturally.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
