Yoni formed in São Paulo in 1996, with Tico Santa Cruz on vocals and guitar, Magno Sant'Anna on bass, and Beto Bruno on drums. They released their self-titled debut album in 1998. Their song "Solitário" came out in 1999 as a single from their second album, "Para Sempre." The band's sound drew from rock, bossa nova, and Brazilian folk.
Yoni's music sometimes faced criticism for being too experimental, and some lyrics were seen as provocative. They kept recording, putting out albums like "Ultrassom" in 2002 and "Muito Além" in 2006. Keyboardist Júlio Andrade joined the core lineup along the way.
They played a live show at the Marquês de Sapucaí in 2010, which became an album. The band maintained a steady presence in Brazilian music without dramatic shifts in their approach or membership.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
