Editor's note

Paul Young, the voice behind Everytime You Go Away

A soulful British singer who turned covers into global hits in the 1980s.

For a quick sense of his style, put on "Everytime You Go Away" and "Wherever I Lay My Hat." They're the ones that stick.

Young's version of "Everytime You Go Away" topped charts worldwide and still gets played today. He had a knack for taking songs like "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)" and making them feel like his own. That voice, part falsetto, part blue-eyed soul, gave his records a warmth that cut through the synth-pop era.

He started in the band Sad Café, singing on tracks like "My Oh My." His solo run began with 1983's "No Parlez" and stretched through five albums, including "The Secret of Association," before he shifted toward live shows in the '90s.
