Youngblood Brass Band formed in 1997, drawing from the New Orleans brass tradition that includes groups like Rebirth Brass Band. They put out albums like 'Living in the City' in 2000 and 'Ya'll Stay Up!' in 2003. The track 'Ya'll Stay Up' became something of a local anthem, with its brass riffs and call-and-response energy fitting right into the city's second-line rhythms.
After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the band had to relocate and rebuild like much of the city. They kept recording, with albums such as 'Unlearn' in 2009 and 'Nine Lives' in 2016. Their sound stayed rooted in that brassy, percussive New Orleans style, even as their lineup shifted over time.
They've had a rotating group of musicians, with players like Derrick Tabb on trumpet and vocals, Jacob Evans on trombone, and Kevin Scott on saxophone. The music doesn't try to reinvent the brass band formula so much as channel it with a straightforward, energetic punch.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
