Ysmael Gonzalez was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 1948. He started playing guitar and singing early, influenced by the mariachi music around him. His song 'Bonita Es La Vida' became particularly well-known, along with others like 'Dios Quiere Que Vivas' and 'No Pierdas La Esperanza.'
He worked with musicians including Antonio Gonzalez on bass and Pablo Gonzalez on guitar. At different points he also collaborated with other artists like Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernández.
In 2008, Gonzalez faced domestic violence allegations that he denied. He kept performing and recording through that period. The Latin Recording Academy called him a Living Legend in 2018.
