Yung Belial formed in 2016 around vocalist Damien May and bassist Emily Rose. Their early material, like the 2017 EP 'Vermin' and the single 'Grim,' established a heavy sound that pulled from black metal, doom, and sludge. The band's lyrics often dealt with nihilism and the occult, which drew criticism and sometimes led to venue cancellations.
Their 2019 album 'Grim' included the title track and songs like 'Spine' and 'Robert Smyth.' That record's association with certain listeners brought accusations of racism and fascism, which the band denied. The current lineup includes guitarist Eli Smith alongside May and Rose.
Musically, they've cited influences like Black Sabbath, Mayhem, and Godflesh. May's lyrics show some interest in Nietzsche and Lovecraft. Their live shows were known for being raw and visceral, which built them a loyal following despite the controversies.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
