Yung Mavu formed in 2016 in Melbourne, Australia, with siblings Mavu and Hiatus Kaiyote at the center. Their debut EP 'Black Magic' came out the following year, mixing R&B and soul with electronic beats. The group includes vocalist Mavu, bassist Hiatus Kaiyote, synth player Nkechi Anele, guitarist Jono Ma, and drummer Masego.
In 2019, their performance at a festival drew backlash over cultural appropriation claims. They defended the work as celebrating diversity. Their later EPs 'The Art of War' and 'Wishes' followed in 2018 and 2020.
