Yuri Peltier

Yuri Peltier came up in Rio de Janeiro during the early 1980s with a band that carried his name. His music pulled from Brazilian traditions like samba and reggae, but also from the spiritual imagery of Candomblé, which gave his songs a particular weight. The track "Beijo de Iemanjá" became his calling card, a song dedicated to the Yoruba sea goddess that found an audience beyond just music charts.

He recorded several albums in the 1980s and 1990s, including Nova Era in 1984 and Coração Cigano a decade later. Songs like "Canto de Iara" and "A Morte" continued in that vein, mixing folkloric themes with personal reflection. The band's sound was built around Peltier's voice and guitar, with Luizinho de Lima on bass and Jorge Gomes on drums.

Peltier's career had its quieter stretches, partly due to his own struggles with addiction and depression. He was also known for speaking his mind on social issues, which sometimes put him at odds with the mainstream. What stuck, though, were those early recordings, songs that felt grounded in place and spirit, without trying to smooth over the rough edges.
