Yuriko formed in Tokyo in 1995 with vocalist Yuriko Igarashi, guitarist Hiroki Yasuda, bassist Hiroyuki Ichikawa, and drummer Takao Miyamoto. They built a local following but struggled to land a major record deal, partly because their sound didn't fit neatly into existing categories.
In 2001, their single "Bad Timing" became a hit in Japan, topping charts for weeks. The song's melody and Igarashi's vocals gave the band a sudden national profile, and it later appeared in films and TV shows abroad. Other tracks like "Eyes Are Black" and "The Boy With Nails In His Eyes" showed a similar mix of pop accessibility and darker lyrical edges.
As their popularity grew, Yuriko faced increased scrutiny. Igarashi's public persona and the band's style drew both fans and critics, and they dealt with allegations of plagiarism that complicated their rise. They released four studio albums between 2002 and 2007, including self-titled and "Bad Timing" LPs, before activity slowed.
