Yussef Lima

Yussef Lima came up in Salvador, Bahia, where he absorbed the local sounds of samba and bossa nova alongside broader influences from MPB and artists like Erykah Badu. His debut album 'Convívio' arrived in 1999, with the title track becoming a national hit. That record set a tone for his work, mixing Brazilian rhythms with contemporary soul in a way that felt both grounded and personal.

He kept releasing albums through the 2000s, including 'Rio Novo' in 2002 and 'A Voz do Coração' in 2006. Songs like 'It's Alright' and 'Um Lugar' show his tendency toward introspective writing, often leaning into melancholy moods over brighter arrangements. Some early critics questioned his fusion of genres, but he stuck with it, gradually weaving in touches of jazz and funk without losing the Brazilian core.

Lima works with a regular band that includes Felipe Cordeiro on guitar, Virgílio Vergílio on keyboards and vocals, Alexandre Cavallo on bass, Christiano Galvão on drums, and Monique Kessous on percussion. Their playing gives his music a lived-in, ensemble feel rather than a solo project's polish. Later albums like 'Elemento' and 'Abraço' continued in this vein, exploring emotional terrain without chasing trends.
