Yusuf Islam was born Stephen Demetre Georgiou in London in 1948. He started performing as a folk singer in his teens and signed with Decca Records in 1966, releasing his debut album 'Matthew and Son.' His 1967 single 'I Love My Dog' reached number one in the UK.

In the early 1970s, he had international success with albums like 'Tea for the Tillerman' and 'Teaser and the Firecat,' known for their melodic folk-rock sound. In 1977, after reading the Quran, he converted to Islam, changed his name from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam, and stopped making music for several years.

He returned to recording in 1983 with 'Majikat,' blending Islamic music with Western pop. Since then, he has continued to release albums, including songs like 'Peace Train' and 'Maybe There's A World.' He founded the Small Kindness charity in 1985 to support refugees and disadvantaged communities.
