Archive material and source history
Yves Armstrong formed in New York City in 1998, with Yves Armstrong on vocals and guitar, Ethan Harper on keyboards and programming, and Dimitri Petrov on percussion. They signed with the independent label Merge Records. Their music was experimental, drawing from electronica and avant-garde sources, and avoided traditional song structures.
Their first album was called 'New' and came out in 2000. That song and others like 'Stay Strong' and 'Terminal do Silêncio' featured lyrics that explored mental health and social alienation. Some critics questioned their approach, and 'New' was accused of glorifying drug use.
Ethan Harper left in 2006, followed by Dimitri Petrov in 2007. Yves Armstrong continued as a solo project and released a final album called 'The End' in 2008 before dissolving. They put out four albums total: 'New' (2000), 'Departure' (2003), 'Invisible' (2005), and 'The End' (2008).
