Zarkhã formed around vocalist and guitarist Katia Guerreiro, bassist Pedro Saraiva, and drummer Ricardo Sousa. They began mixing traditional Portuguese fado with folk and electronic touches, which drew some early criticism from purists who found the blend unconventional.
Their 2014 debut album 'Alma Lusa' received praise for that mix of old and new sounds. The song 'Mais Saudades' came out in 2017 and became their most recognized track, built around a melancholic melody and lyrics about memory and loss.
They maintained they were paying homage while bringing a fresh perspective.
