Z. O Family formed in São Paulo in the late 1990s, mixing hip-hop, reggae, and funk with evangelical themes. The original lineup included Juninho Afram on vocals, DJ Alpiste on turntables, Emerson Leonardo on keyboards, Marcio Mello on bass, and Júnior Mimoso on drums. Their approach sometimes drew criticism from within the church for blending sacred messages with street sounds, but it also found listeners outside traditional gospel circles.
Their debut album 'The Gospel is Rap' came out with the single 'A Verdadeira Paz,' which became widely known. They followed it with albums like 'Falar Verdade' and 'Tá no Ar.' The group's lineup changed over time, but they kept working in that space where rap and gospel meet.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
