Zabili Mi Zolwia formed in Warsaw in the late 1970s, with Marek Piekarczyk on vocals, Janusz Pyzalski on guitar, Piotr Pawłucki on bass, and Piotr 'Magik' Majewski on drums. Their name translates to 'They Killed My Turtle,' and they played a raw, energetic style of punk rock that drew from both Western bands like The Ramones and Polish musical traditions.
The following year, they released 'Życie jak dym' (Life Like Smoke), whose title track became an anthem for disaffected youth. Other songs like 'Żywioł głupca' and 'Barykady' captured a similar mood of frustration and defiance.
They kept recording through the 1980s and '90s, putting out albums like 'Mijanka' and 'Samo życie.' The band eventually parted ways in the early 2000s, though they briefly reunited for a farewell tour in 2017. Piekarczyk went on to a solo career, while the other members pursued various projects.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
