Zabumbazul formed in Recife in the late 1990s, with Helio Bentes on vocals, Beto Casagrande on accordion, Lula Lira on zabumba, Gileno Félix on guitar, and Diego Andrade on bass. Their music pulls from traditional northeastern Brazilian rhythms like baião and maracatu, built around the driving zabumba drum and Bentes's vocals.
They've released albums roughly every four years since 2006, including 'Baião Encomendado' in 2008 and 'Zabumbazul Cinco' in 2020. Songs like 'Forró no Cerrado' and 'Menina forrozeira' show their grounding in forró traditions while incorporating other elements.
Some of their work has drawn criticism for being overtly political or using explicit language, with Bentes explaining their lyrics reflect Brazilian social realities. Their music continues to evolve while staying rooted in those northeastern rhythms.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
