Archive material and source history
Zack Hexum was a musician who played guitar and sang vocals for the band 311. The group formed in 1990 with members including Doug "SA" Martinez, Tim Mahoney, Chad Sexton, and Nick Hexum. Their sound mixed rock with rap and reggae, which found an audience in the mid-90s alternative scene.
311's 1995 album "Music" went multi-platinum, helped by singles like "Down." Later records such as "Grassroots" and "Soundsystem" kept the band going through the decade. Hexum wrote songs for the group, including tracks like "Work of Art" and "All I Want" that appeared in their catalog.
In December 1993, Hexum died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 26. The band continued recording and touring after his death, with his brother Nick Hexum remaining as a guitarist and vocalist.
