Zafra formed in Lima, Peru around 2002, with members including Quique Neira on vocals and guitar, Pepe Céspedes on guitar, and Alex Acuña on drums. Their name references the sweet nectar from sugar cane, a nod to their Peruvian background.
Their song "Pipa de La Paz" came out in 2005 and became their most recognizable track. The title refers to the traditional Andean wooden flute used in healing rituals, and the song's lyrics follow a solitary traveler's path.
Zafra's albums include their self-titled 2002 debut, "De La Selva al Mar" from 2005, and later releases like "La Canción del Viento" in 2008 and "Amazonas" in 2016. Their music draws from Andean rhythms and Afro-Peruvian beats while touching on themes of social justice.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
