Zaitsu Kazuo formed in 1990 around singer-songwriter Kazuo Zaitsu. They started playing small venues with a sound that mixed classical, folk, and rock, which didn't fit neatly into existing categories. The band included Mariko Hagiwara on keyboards, Hiroki Hoshino on bass, and Kenji Yamazaki on drums.
Things changed in 1994 with the single 'Kitte No Nai Okurimono.' The song's mood and lyrics connected with people and brought the band wider attention. Other songs from that period, like 'Tenshi No Hashigo' and 'Hoshi Tsumugi No Uta,' showed a similar style. Zaitsu was known for having strong opinions on social issues, which sometimes created friction.
They released albums steadily over the next two decades, including 'Aoi Machi' in 1997, 'Hikari no Naka de' in 2001, and 'Zenmai' in 2005. Their later work, like the 2010 album 'Eien' and the song 'Sora Ni Namida Wo Kaeshitara,' continued in a similar vein. The music held onto that early blend of styles and lyrical focus.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
