Zakformaat XL started as a Dutch trio in 2000 with Gerrit Komrij, DJ Ramone, and Boem Pauwels. Their song 'Goede Vaart' became a hit, mixing pop, hip-hop, and reggae in a way that caught on quickly.
They put out six albums between 2000 and 2016, including 'Het Diepe' in 2003 and 'XL' in 2016. The band's lineup changed over time, with Pauwels leaving in 2006 and Ruben Hein joining on bass in 2009.
Komrij's Parkinson's diagnosis affected the group's work, but they kept recording and playing shows. Their sound shifted some, picking up bits of soul and funk later on without losing that initial pop energy.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
