Zakkum formed in the early 2000s in Turkey's underground rock scene. Their debut album 'Ahtapotlar' came out in 2004, with the title track becoming something of an anthem for a certain segment of Turkish youth. The band's sound was built around frontman Emre Erdem's raw vocals and guitar work, and lyrics that didn't shy away from confrontation.
That direct approach sometimes got them into trouble. The band's lineup shifted frequently over time, with Erdem remaining the constant figure. Drummer Alican Tekelioğlu left in 2006, and other members came and went.
They kept releasing albums despite the turbulence. 'Ben de Yoluma Giderim' followed in 2006, and 'Karanfil' arrived in 2012, showing a somewhat more introspective side. Songs like 'Sanrı' and '24 Ayar' from their catalog maintained their following. The group has toured consistently, with a later lineup including guitarist Emre Malikler, bassist Serkan Aydemir, and drummer Özgür Kankaya alongside Erdem.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
