Zannah formed in London around 2015 with vocalist Zara Bloom, guitarist Jake Stone, and drummer Ava Thorne. Their debut EP 'Echoes' came out in 2017, featuring the track 'Pins' which got some attention for its moody, vulnerable feel. They followed with albums 'Ashes' in 2019 and 'Embers' in 2022.
Bloom's voice and lyrics tend to be the focus, with Stone's guitar work and Thorne's drumming providing the backdrop. The songs often lean into emotional territory, like 'Were Last Week' from their later material. They've worked with other artists, including Julien Baker at one point.
In 2018, Bloom dealt with a health issue that affected her singing, but she kept performing. Some of their lyrics have touched on social topics, which has drawn both support and criticism. They're still putting out music, but the catalog copy about their 'indelible mark' or being 'one of the most influential bands of our time' feels like promotional padding. What's here is a London-based band with a few releases and a consistent sound.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
