Zanto Holanda came together in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s, mixing funk carioca with samba and electronic dance beats. The band's 1996 album 'Nua' gave them a national hit with the title track, which became something of an anthem in Brazil at the time.
Their lineup has included Zanto on vocals, Davi Jacaré on bass, Marcelo Vig on drums, and Santaninha on percussion. They put out a few more records after 'Nua,' like 'Maré Vermelha' in 1998 and a self-titled album in 2003.
Their live shows and lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being sexually explicit, but they didn't really back down from that. The music found listeners outside Brazil too, at festivals and clubs in Europe and North America.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
