Zapata formed in São Paulo in the early 1990s, taking their name from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. The original lineup included vocalist Zé Geraldo, guitarist Tonho Crocco, bassist Fernando Anitelli, and drummer Daniel San.
Their 1994 debut album 'Alta Fidelidade' established them with a raw rock sound, but it was the single 'Apareça pra dizer adeus' that became their breakout hit.
Over eight studio albums including 'Rádio' (1998) and 'Mundo Real' (2010), their sound incorporated elements of MPB and folk alongside their rock foundation. The band faced lineup changes over time, with Crocco departing in 2005 and San leaving in 2009, though Geraldo and Anitelli remained constant members.
In 1998, Zapata became involved in a legal dispute over the unauthorized use of 'Apareça pra dizer adeus' in a political advertisement. The band pursued copyright infringement claims, and the case eventually resolved in their favor.
