Zapatta formed in São Paulo in 1973, with vocalist Sandra de Sá and guitarist Chico Amaral at the center. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1975, and its lead single "A Hora e a Vez do Amor" became a major hit in Brazil. The song's blend of samba and bossa nova with rock elements gave them a distinct sound that caught on quickly.
They followed up with albums like "Esperança" in 1976 and "A Nova Dança" in 1978, working with composer Marcos Valle on arrangements. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social themes, which drew criticism from conservative groups at the time. But they kept recording through the early 1980s, putting out "A Paz em Nosso Tempo" in 1981.
Sandra de Sá's voice carried their material, while Chico Amaral's guitar work gave it texture. They never quite replicated the widespread success of "A Hora e a Vez do Amor," but that song remained their signature piece. In Brazil, you can still hear it on radio stations that play older popular music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
