Zarahn formed in Beijing in 2009 with Luna Sun on vocals, Han Xi on guitar, Li Lei on bass, and Wu Yao on drums. Their debut album 'Guai Dan Cheng Zhi Ye' came out in 2010, and its title track became a signature song for them. The band's sound mixed indie rock with folk elements and Chinese traditional influences, built around Sun's vocals and Xi's guitar work.
They released two more studio albums after that first one: 'Yi Ge Ren De Dongtian' in 2013 and 'Wan Xiang Tan Jin' in 2016. Other songs like 'Road Trip' and 'Too Late' also became part of their catalog. Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too introspective, and they faced some censorship from Chinese authorities over certain songs.
Zarahn kept writing and performing through these challenges, staying with their original lineup. Their music found an audience that connected with its particular blend of melancholy and melody, even as it operated within the constraints of their environment.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
