Zarapatéu formed in Serpa, a town in Portugal's Algarve region. The band includes Nuno Gonçalves on vocals and guitar, Tiago Nogueira on drums, João Palma on bass, and Ricardo Coelho on guitar. They've released albums like their self-titled debut in 2006, followed by "Terra dos Sonhos" in 2009 and "Quatro Caminhos" in 2015.
Their song "Dona Mariquinha" from the 2012 album of the same name became particularly well-known in Portugal. It's been used in films and television shows there. Another track, "Maracatu Embolado," also appears among their most recognized work.
Some listeners have questioned their approach to blending traditional Portuguese folk with contemporary rhythms, while others have appreciated the experimentation. The band put out "Mil e Uma Noites" in 2018.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
