Zarif formed in 2010 with Anya Derksen on vocals, Marcus Gravelle on guitar, Micah Hunter on bass, and Ethan James on drums. They released their debut EP 'Solitude' in 2013, followed by the full-length album 'Ashes' in 2016. Their song 'California' became something of an anthem for the band.
Their music tends toward dreamy, introspective territory, with lyrics that often touch on love and loss. The track 'Something Got You' features a collaboration with The Nextmen, showing a willingness to work outside their usual lineup.
In 2018, the band faced some internal conflicts that became public, but they managed to work through them and continue making music together. They've kept a relatively low profile since then, without the dramatic career arcs that sometimes define California bands.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
