Zashema formed in Harare, Zimbabwe in the late 1990s around vocalist Georgette "Gee" Sibanda and keyboardist Prince "Paa" Chinanga. Their debut album "G Is In The House" came out in 2000, with the title track mixing Afrobeat and dancehall. The record included work with Oliver Mtukudzi and Leon Schuster.
Sibanda's lyrics and the band's videos sometimes drew criticism for addressing topics like gender inequality and political corruption. The group released several more albums through the 2000s, including "The Heat" in 2002 and "Crazy Love" in 2004.
Other members included bassist Tendai "Tee" Manatsa, drummer Edward "Edo" Matenga, and percussionist Tawanda Mandaza. They toured regularly, playing what was often described as Afro-fusion music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
