Zawa formed in Mexico City around 2007, with vocalist Maria José Llergo and guitarist Ricardo Nájera at the center. Their music pulled from traditional Mexican melodies and indie rock, and they built a following through raw, emotional performances. In 2012, their debut album 'Desierto' brought wider attention, and the song 'Malvada' became a standout track for them.

Around 2016, the band faced a personal challenge when Nájera was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder. They continued working, and later albums like 'Aurora' (2017) and 'Raíz' (2020) showed them incorporating other sounds, including electronica and folk. The group also included bassist Rodrigo Montaño and drummer Marco Maldonado.
