Zaya formed in New Orleans in the early 2010s, led by vocalist and guitarist Zelda Rodriguez. Their 2015 single 'Bioman' became a breakthrough track, mixing funk, soul, and hip-hop elements into something that caught attention beyond their local scene. The song's energy and Rodriguez's delivery gave the band a recognizable starting point.
After bassist Marcus Johnson left in 2017, Emily Carter joined on bass. The group released two albums: their self-titled debut in 2016 and 'New Dawn' in 2019. Songs like 'Fleur bleue' and 'Les autoroutes de l'information' show their range from groove-driven tracks to more reflective material.
The band includes Rodriguez, Carter, drummer Jake Hayes, keyboardist Tyrone Williams, and guitarist Josh Richards. Their work sometimes touches on social themes, but they've mostly kept the focus on the music itself rather than building a grand narrative around it.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
