Zé Alves

Zé Alves came out of Lisbon in the late 1980s. The band's sound pulled from folk, rock, and fado, which gave them a particular texture in the Portuguese scene. Their 1998 album "À Sua Caça" is one of their better-known releases, and songs like "Prá que lembrar" and "Vida de cachorro" show their range from reflective to more rhythmic material.

They were fronted by Zé Alves himself, with Vítor Rua on guitar, Pedro Gonçalves on bass, and Mário Delgado on drums. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social themes, which occasionally stirred discussion. They worked with Amália Rodrigues and Chico Buarque at different points, collaborations that brought their music into conversation with other traditions.

Later albums like "Lágrimas" (2001) and "Em Busca da Luz" (2005) continued in a similar vein. Tracks such as "Baile anos 60" and "Samba do Flamengo" suggest they didn't stick to one mood or tempo. Their performances had a certain intensity that became part of their reputation.
