Archive material and source history
Zé Argolo was born in Olinda, Pernambuco in 1917. He played accordion and guitar, drawing from frevo and baião rhythms that were part of the region's sound.
In the late 1940s, he wrote "Vou Morar No Cabaré," a song that became his signature piece. When it was released in 1953, the lyrics about escaping poverty through fantasy drew criticism for their references to prostitution, but it connected with working-class listeners.
He recorded other songs like "Mineiro Que É Mineiro," "Madalena," and "Maria Inêz." He worked with Luiz Gonzaga and Gilberto Gil. Zé Argolo died in 1987.
