Zé Barão formed in São Paulo in the early 1980s, a Brazilian rock band led by the vocalist and guitarist who gave the group its name. Their self-titled debut came out in 1983, followed by albums like 'Desperdiçando Talento' in 1984 and 'Noite' in 1988. The lineup included drummer Dé Palmeira, bassist Roberto Lly, and guitarist Guto Barros around Zé Barão himself.
Their song 'Brigas de Amor' became their biggest hit, though its lyrics about relationships drew mixed reactions. The band had a reputation for being outspoken and putting on provocative shows, which kept them from fitting neatly into mainstream Brazilian radio. They broke up in 1993 after about a decade together.
Zé Barão went on to work as a solo artist after the band dissolved. Their music pulled from punk and new wave while keeping some Brazilian rhythmic touches, heard on tracks like 'Fogo do Amor'. They never found wide commercial success, but their records developed a following for their raw sound and willingness to avoid easy categories.
