Zé Barbosa was born in 1915 in Campo Maior, Piauí, a rural area in northeastern Brazil. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in the 1930s, where he began performing. His song 'Serenata' came out in 1947 and became his most well-known work.
He performed with a group called Trio Nordestino, which included Zé do Norte on accordion and João do Vale on zabumba. Other songs from his catalog include 'Mulher Rendilheira' and 'Cantigas do Nordeste'.
Barbosa was known for his romantic serenades and was active for several decades. He died in 1997.
