Zé Barrero e Catuaba formed in 1973 when José Ribamar Ribeiro (Zé Barrero) and Edélcio Gomes dos Santos (Catuaba) met in Salvador, Bahia. Their song 'O Lobo e o Frango' came out the following year and became their biggest hit. They released nine studio albums together, including 'Barra Pesada' in 1975 and 'Os Quentes e os Famosos' in 1979.
Their music mixed folk and rock with satirical humor that often targeted Brazilian authorities and social conventions. This led to censorship and occasional trouble with officials, but their live shows developed a reputation for raw energy and loyal audiences. Other songs like 'Singelo Mecânico' and 'Sexo, Pinga e Tião Carreiro In Roll' carried on their style of pointed commentary wrapped in catchy melodies.
Zé Barrero handled lead vocals and guitar while Catuaba contributed vocals and percussion, with both writing material. Their work from the 1970s remains part of Brazilian popular culture, known for its wit and willingness to provoke.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
